Orange Peel Texture
Orange peel texture appears when a plastic sheet remains exposed to elevated temperatures for an extended period. The prolonged heat soak alters the surface behavior of the material, producing a fine pebbled texture that resembles the skin of an orange.
The defect is most noticeable in thin drawn areas where the sheet has experienced significant stretching. Although the part geometry may remain acceptable, the surface quality is degraded and often fails cosmetic requirements.
- Eliminate unnecessary heat soak time, especially when processing heat-sensitive materials.
- Reduce sheet exposure to elevated temperatures before forming.
- Use aluminum mesh screening to reduce radiant heat energy in areas prone to excessive thinning.
- Optimize heater zoning to maintain a more uniform temperature profile across the sheet.
- Monitor sheet temperature carefully and avoid exceeding the recommended processing window.
